Iran Says US Must Prove Commitment to Nuclear Deal
In an interview published Sunday, Takht-Ravanchi said recent indirect talks in Oman indicated that Washington is seeking a peaceful resolution. He added that the responsibility now rests with the US to demonstrate that it genuinely wants to make a deal. “If [the Americans] are sincere, I’m sure we will be on the road to an agreement,” he said.
The deputy minister emphasized that discussions about Iran’s nuclear program must be paired with talks on sanctions. “One cannot accept the notion that Iran has to do certain things without the other side committing itself to do their share,” he stated.
Takht-Ravanchi also suggested that Tehran believes a key sticking point in its standoff with the US has been resolved. US President Donald Trump had repeatedly demanded that Iran abandon its nuclear program entirely and adopt a “zero enrichment” policy, which Iran has consistently rejected. However, Tehran has indicated willingness to compromise on uranium enrichment levels and dilute its fission material stockpile.
“Our understanding is that [the Americans] have come to the conclusion that if you want to have a deal, you have to focus on the nuclear issue,” Takht-Ravanchi said, adding that the “issue of zero enrichment is not an issue anymore, and as far as Iran is concerned, it is not on the table anymore.”
