Trump Confirms US, Iran are Negotiating
“They are negotiating,” Trump told reporters at the White House, without offering further specifics.
His comments followed the shooting down of an Iranian drone by a U.S. fighter jet in the Arabian Sea after it approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.
“They had a chance to do something a while ago, and it didn't work out, and we did (Operation) Midnight Hammer. I don't think they want that happening again, but they would like to negotiate. We are negotiating with them right now,” Trump added.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said preparations are underway to hold talks with the U.S. in the coming days, with consultations ongoing to finalize the location. “Planning has been made to hold the talks in the next few days, and consultations are underway to determine the location of the talks, which will be announced as soon as they are finalized," spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said.
White House officials also indicated that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to hold discussions with Iranian representatives later this week. He had been set to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Istanbul on Friday regarding Iran’s nuclear program, according to reports.
Recent updates suggest that Iran has requested changes to the venue and format, expressing a preference to meet directly rather than through intermediaries. Reports also indicate that Tehran now wants to relocate the talks from Istanbul to Oman.
